Can I treat heel pain at home?

Yes, you can treat heel pain at home. Start by resting your heel the moment you feel discomfort to prevent further injury. Avoid walking and standing for long periods of time and make sure you don’t repeat the actions that gave you pain in the first place.

You can also try applying ice to your heel for five to ten minute increments. This will ease the swelling. We can advise you on the best anti-inflammatory pain medication for your particular situation.

Stretching is a good way to keep the tissues warmed up and flexible without putting stress and pressure on the area. You can also take a warm foot bath to relax your muscles.

If your heel pain won’t go away, Chiropodist Douglas Broad at Achilles Custom Orthotics & Footcare can design a unique pair or orthotics to end your persistent discomfort. Make an appointment online or by calling our office in Cambridge, ON, at (519) 624-4122.

What are the most common causes of heel pain?

The shoes you wear, the type of exercise you do, and your weight can all be contributing factors to your aching feet. Here are some common causes of heel pain.

Plantar fasciitis is the most common reason for pain under your heel. It happens when you damage your plantar fascia, a band of tissue that connects the heel to the toes. The tissue develops mini tears, thickens, and becomes inflamed.

Achilles tendinitis happens when you damage the tissue connecting your calf muscles to your heel. It’s usually an overuse injury that occurs with runners and active adults.

Sever’s disease is frequently found in active children. The calf muscle pulls on the Achilles tendon, which is connected to the child’s growth plate in the back of the foot. This causes pain where it is attached to the heel.

Most of these conditions can be handled conservatively by Douglas Broad at Achilles Custom Orthotics & Footcare. Call our office in Cambridge, ON, at (519) 624-4122 or visit our website to make an appointment.
