Heel Pain Treatment in Cambridge40-hour week? More like 40-hour pain. When you’re standing all day at your job, you put a lot of pressure on the heels of your feet. We see a lot of patients with heel pain from standing. It doesn’t surprise us, since Cambridge has a lot of factories in the area, with construction being one of the top industries around.

Some jobs require standing for the entire work day, which could mean eight to ten hours of strain on your lower extremities. The time you spend standing could cause problems, even if you’re not doing anything to agitate or irritate your feet. This stress could develop into plantar fasciitis, which is a common cause for the aching bones and tendons in your foot. Here are some tips to head off heel pain.

Ask your employer to provide padded mats for the area where you stand. The cushion from the mat takes stress off your heels. If you feel particularly sore after work, don’t shy away from the tried and true method of Rest-Ice-Compression-Elevation. Incorporate stretching into your routine before work to minimize pain and swelling afterwards.

Shoes with more support, like athletic footwear, could be just the change you need. You can also place gel inserts in your shoes, which would absorb some shock and relieve discomfort. You may want to purchase an orthotic shoe specifically for work. At Achilles Custom Orthotics and Footcare, one of our main specialties is orthotics. We have a laser and a contact scanner to create a unique design for you—right in our office.

We know how heel pain from standing can be annoying, especially when you feel like you can’t do anything about it. Call Chiropodist Douglas Broad at Achilles Custom Orthotics and Footcare in Cambridge at (519) 624-4122, or schedule an appointment on our website. We’ll help you stand against pain.

Best Stretches to Treat Heel PainThe weather is warming, and it’s time to get moving. However, heel pain could be slowing you down and keeping you from weekend fun. You don’t want to miss out on activities such as the Top Guns Social Dance on Saturday, April 19 and Easter weekend festivities with the family. Ignoring the sharp pain will get you nowhere—it’s time for relief. Where can you start? Let’s walk through the best stretches for heel pain.

Calf Stretch

The first stretch requires a wall. Extend your leg behind you and lean towards the wall with your other leg. Tilt forward until you feel a calf stretch in your back leg. Repeat with opposite leg. This stretch helps prevent plantar fasciitis, a common cause of heel pain.

Arch Stretch

For the second stretch, sit down and reach over the front of your foot. Pull the toes toward you until you feel a stretch in your arch. Repeat on the opposite foot

Towel Curls

Third, sit down and place a towel underneath both of your feet. With one foot, pull the towel towards you. Keep the towel anchored with your other foot.

What Causes Heel Pain?

Heel pain is a common foot ailment. In plain terms, it is the result of placing excess pressure on the heel bone and tissues around it. The discomfort can be developed from walking, jogging, and jumping on hard surfaces like pavement or wood floors. You can also experience this if you wear flip-flops or other badly designed shoes. Adults may have this problem because the heel and the surrounding tissues wear out over time. People who are overweight and diabetic are also more susceptible.

At Achilles Custom Orthotics & Footcare, we know the best stretches for heel pain and are available five days a week to help you get back on your feet. Call our Cambridge office at (519) 624-4122, or schedule an appointment on our website.
